Our group of 11 had a great 11 day round trip motorbike ride from Hanoi through the beautiful mountains and countryside of Northern Vietnam. The classic Urals and modified Minsks were very distinctive and served well through a variety of terrains. The roads are generally sealed but potholes, gravel and wandering animals mean speeds have to be kept in check. I would suggest that you be honest when describing your level of experience to the organisers and that will help with suitable route planning. We stayed each night in small hotels, small resorts or ‘homestay’ accomodation, all of which were generally clean and comfortable – although the Vietnamese do tend to use mattresses that err on the firm side. The food tends to be fairly basic but good, fresh and tasty, especially in the homestays. The ham / salami, cheeses and pickles, lunch picnics are also great. The tour was well organised, with a very experienced guide leading the group and a pair of mechanics following behind to ensure smooth running bikes and keeping stragglers on the correct route. The Vietnamese people are happy and smiling, especially the children, who wave and say hello everywhere and always seem happy to see strangers. Take your camera, pictures of home / family / maybe a few sweets or little things as gifts. Prepare to adapt to Vietnamese driving styles that, whilst being chaotic at times are generally very passive and safe once you realise how it works. The North of the country is great with dramatic scenery, but the other destinations further south are also fine to visit. Highly recommended.
