Take a Wild Ride into Western Mongolia

  • Arrive at the modern Chinggis Khan Airport and be driven to a hotel west of the traffic-congested and gridlocked Ulaanbaatar. We’ll feast under the stars, plan our adventure and perhaps even drink some fermented horse milk.

  • Today, we’ll travel far up north toward the border with Russia, riding on a good tarmac road through the boundless expanse of the Selenge Aimag. We’ll pass green hills and far-off valleys.
Hills south of Khovsgol Lake

  • Amarsbaysagalant Monastery
  • We head out on a good tarmac road and head into the wild heart of Mongolia, where things are quiet, and the land is filled with rolling hills, traditional gers, yaks, and fast wild horses. We’ll follow the winding Selenge River to the impressive Amarsbaysagalant Monastery and pass through the lively city of Erdenet, known for its massive copper mines.

  • Urantogoo Volcano and Lake Khovsgol
  • Get ready for an exciting adventure across the immense Mongolian Steppes, where green valleys spread out before us, hugged by tall mountains in the distance. We’ll pass the extinct Urantogoo Volcano before arriving at the beautiful Lake Khovsgol, surrounded by forest and sheer rock mountains.
Exploring the eastern side of Khovsgol Lake

  • Lake Khovsgol
  • Lake Khovsgol is over two million years old and is known as the “Blue Pearl of Mongolia”. It is surrounded by pretty valleys, wetlands, and rugged grasslands, while sharp, craggy mountains dominate its western shore. We’ll enjoy a wonderful day riding off-piste to reach a ger camp on the lake’s western shore.

  • Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan National Park
  • Our off-piste journey takes us to the Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan National Park, which has many extinct volcanoes, one of which created Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Our ride culminates in a high mountain pass, affording vast views of the enormous, beautiful wilderness.
White Lake

  • Today, we’re going deeper into remote Mongolia, where the land is rough, with large mountains and sprawling steppes stretching in every direction. A large national park surrounds White Lake, which boasts volcanic craters and fields covered in pine trees.
Water crossings near Chaluut

  • We head off-piste to a rarely visited region full of rolling mountains and pine forests. We’ll pass the Khorgo Uul Volcano, which caused White Lake to form, and sleep overnight in the remote settlement of Chuluut.

  • Tsenker Hot Springs
  • We’ll ride off-piste and enjoy vast, wild lands on small trails through hills, forests full of pine trees, and lovely rivers. We’ll stay at a cosy resort, relax in natural hot springs and probably have a massage or two.
Heading towards Khongno Khan

  • Bronze Age relics and the Khulgan Khan Mountains
  • Today, we’ll pass Bronze Age burial sites before taking a break at the deep lava canyon of the Culuut River. Then, we’ll explore the gorgeous Orkon Valley before riding through a dry area with sand dunes. Our camp is nestled against the Khulgan Khan Mountains, where we will watch a beautiful sunset to end our fantastic day.
Heading back to Ulaanbaatar

  • Homeward bound!
  • On our final day’s biking, we cruise an excellent tarmac road back towards the gridlocked streets of Ulaanbaatar. We’ve timed it so that we’ll miss rush hour and be in the splendid comforts of the Novotel before dark.

  • Enjoy a day to explore by foot the incredible Chinggis Khan Museum, the dinosaur-filled Museum of Natural History and the former government state department store, filled with curios gifts to delight your friends back home. We’ll celebrate our adventure late into the night, knowing we’ve been lucky to explore such a vast, varied and magnificent country by the absolute best way to travel: a motorcycle!

Inclusions and Extras

All-Inclusive Mongolia motorcycle tour

You’ll be riding a Suzuki DR-Z400.
Nights are spent at comfortable ger camps or carefully chosen hotels with two people sharing a room or a ger. The last two nights in Ulaanbaatar will be at the Novotel.
A 4WD will carry luggage, spare parts and a spare bike, driven by a mechanic and a local English-speaking guide, who will keep us spellbound with stories of Mongolia’s rich culture and history.
You will need to bring all your own riding gear and make sure it offers good protection. We will ride to very remote locations, so safety is paramount. Ensure your helmet has a visor; if not, bring goggles because sometimes we will ride fast on open tarmac highways.
All meals are included. Most lunches will be picnics. Dinner and breakfast are excellent and hearty.
Ensure you carry an International Driving Permit and have comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance.
Carry a little extra cash to pay for your fuel.
A refundable bond will have to be paid for each motorcycle.
